Name Tags and The Power of Being Relatable

What does being relatable have to do with name tags?

To answer this question, we first must be able to understand what relatability means.

As presented by Ira Glass and quoted by Rebecca Mead in The New Yorker, “Relatability has become widely and unthinkingly accepted as a criterion of value, even by people who might be expected to have more sophisticated critical tools at their disposal. The contemporary meaning of “relatable”—to describe a character or a situation in which an ordinary person might see himself reflected—first was popularized by the television industry.”

In layman’s terms, relatable means enabling a person to feel that they can relate to someone or something. Being relatable makes it possible to understand, like, or have sympathy for because of similarities to oneself or one’s own experiences.

Now that we have that understanding, what does relatability have to do with name tags?

name tags will make anyone more relatable and approachable

Scott Ginsberg, the Name Tag Guy, said, “the first idea to remember is that approachability is a two-way street. It’s both you stepping onto someone’s front porch, and you inviting someone to step onto your front porch. It connects people to you. It allows them to feel more comfortable talking to you.”

Name tags make people approachable. By helping people to connect your name with your face, customers and clients will be more comfortable with your business. And, your employees, in turn, will be loyal to your business and their interactions with your customers.

Loyalty goes for all customers. Everyone enjoys a good customer service experience. When they can purchase the product they are looking for from a friendly and relatable person, they are more likely to repeat their business. And it’s free advertising! People are more apt to share their experience with others who will, in turn, enjoy the benefits your business has to offer.

name tags and approchability make your business more relatableThe biggest hurdle you will face while finding relatability is humanizing the people in your business. Name tags are the key to this issue. By providing that visible name, you allow your brand and reputation to speak for themselves!

As Ginsberg says, “Your name tag is your best friend for several reasons. First of all, a person’s name is the single context of human memory most forgotten. And people are less likely to approach you if they don’t know (or forgot) your name. Secondly, it’s free advertising for you and your company. Third, name tags encourage people to be friendly and more approachable.”

Holidays and Celebrating Nametag Day

Nametag Day is all about spontaneity and silliness!

As we walk around our cities, we often forget to notice the people around us and miss out on chances to connect. A name tag says “I am open. I want to talk to you.” It adds an element of humanity to our day, breaking down an invisible barrier between us.

This holiday was started by a group of friends with organizing experience who decided it would be a great way to spend their time. They are the ones jump-starting this particular endeavor, but anyone who puts on a name tag is part of Team Nametag Day.

This special day is typically celebrated on the first Saturday in June. However, we are with these organizers and agree that every day should be Nametag Day.

And they believe that this holiday belongs to everyone!

nametag day is celebrated currently in san francisco and new york city

Nametag Day is entirely non-commercial, staffed by volunteers, and no people or organizations will profit financially from the event. All funds raised go to name tags, markers and other logistics costs. And we all profit from the day! We want people to make new friends, learn new things, and share a few extra smiles.

Who is helping make this holiday happen?

You! Every person who volunteers, donates money, wears a name tag, or spreads the word contributes to making Nametag Day a reality.

We are especially grateful to The Awesome Foundation, nametag.com and NYC Social Sports Club for their generous contributions.

How can you start your Nametag Day?

nametag day celebrated in san francisco but can be celebrated anywhere name tags are wornAnyone can celebrate this holiday, wherever you are – just wear a name tag! If you’d like to conduct a larger event, we request that you follow these core principles of Nametag Day:

The spirit of this holiday is to encourage openness, connection, and spontaneous fun. That’s it, nothing more.
Participants are expected to go to extra lengths to appear non-commercial. This means not wearing the same hats or shirts, etc.

Nametag Day doesn’t stop at 5pm. We hope that you will continue to acknowledge the people who make up your world. Smile and reply, “It’s okay” next time someone bumps you on the Muni. Say hello to that shy coworker.

Thank you to these organizers for making a holiday so special and dear to our hearts. We love being a part of this day and celebration!

Donating, History and Name Tags

Donating to our customers is an excellent way to express our community support!

We’re at it again! Our newest donation was to the Historical Society of Princeton (HSP). Donating our time and goods to those in our community is something in which Coller Industries takes pride. We love helping out where we can.

Izzy Kasdin, Executive Director of HSP, said, “These name tags will help our staff present a unified, professional front. They will also help at other events in the community. The name tags will help enhance our brand recognition and awareness in the community.”

coller industries donating time and name tags to historical society of princetonHSP is a museum, research center, and public programming site dedicated to bringing the history of Princeton to life. HSP is based at the historic Updike Farmstead in Princeton.

Our mission is to serve as a hub for cultural enrichment, experiential education, and stewardship of collections. This is to enhance community vitality and build historical literacy, cornerstones of healthy civic culture.

The collection underscores all of HSP’s programming, which includes exhibitions (on and off-site), research services, school programs, public events, walking tours, curriculum support and professional development for teachers, and preservation of collections.

Kasdin also stated, “If we are successful in our mission, our audiences will have a passion for history and will appreciate its importance in connecting with others and learning about the world around them. By inspiring children and adults to be curious history stewards, we hope to pass along the important lessons of the past. We believe our work will ultimately lead to respectful and responsible behavior among people, toward each other, and toward the built and natural world around us.”

one of the newest donations from coller industries was to paws and claws rescue and resortBrenda Bray, a volunteer at Paws and Claws Rescue & Resort, “We are passionate about animals. We build our new shelter with state of the art sanitation and ventilation. This ensures that the animals remain healthy and thrive. Our new solar array helps us with energy efficiency. The boarding and grooming services of Paws and Claws will fund the no-kill shelter. We will also provide community programs for young and old alike and eventually have a program to provide service animals to veterans.”

Paws and Claws has received more than one donation from Coller Industries. The first donation was for the resort’s board members. The name tags aided in recognition to spread awareness and raise the needed funds to build the shelter.

“This second donation will be used for our newly hired employees and our volunteers as we open the shelter in July,” explained Bray.
